Marketing Yourself

Social networking has become a very popular way to promote yourself and your business. Networking is a large part of the photography industry, so why not enhance your online networking skills as much as you’re working on your offline skills?

Facebook and Twitter have become a highly ranked resource for networking with people all across the globe. It would be to our advantage to take advantage of such a great opportunity.

Your Facebook Account

Here’s a few suggestions on getting the most out of your Facebook account:

1. Display your photography by setting up different albums that represent the types of photography you’ve done, and would like to do more of.

2. Find groups with like minded people (i.e. other photographers, makeup artists, stylists, etc etc) You can even start your own group and have a large following if people are interested in what you have to say!

3. Make sure to provide links where people can get more information about you (i.e. website, blog, articles written about you, myspace, etc etc)

4. Consider registering a domain name that forwards directly to your facebook account. For example, you may buy a url such as (YourBusinessNameFacebook). The domain will be easy to read, and people will know that it’s connected to your Facebook account!

Do you Tweet?

Another great way to stay connected with people, and vice versa, is with a Twitter account. Basically it’s like a micro blog, where you’re only allotted 140 characters to say what you gotta say!

To get the most out of it, you should make sure to not only send out messages on your own account, but to stay connected with people that are following you. That way, there’s actually a conversation going on, and you’re not the only one talking.

Not sure what Twitter is? You can see an example at my Twitter page, and follow me if you’d like! Check it out here at  Cheri Amour’s Twitter Page.

Here’s a few suggestions on getting the most out of Twitter:

1. The more you Tweet, the better. Of course you don’t just want to tweet about irrelevant things unless you know your followers will be interested. However, post frequently so people will start to remember you.

2. When someone decides to follow you, send a message thanking them. Try to stay in touch and build a relationship with people that are interested in you.

3. Link your Twitter account to your Facebook. That way whenever you tweet, it will automatically be posted on your Facebook, and you’ll never have to worry about manually doing it. What a time saver!

  1. These are some really good suggestion. Thanks for posting them. I really liked how clearly you explained the advantages of using Twitter and Facebook. I just wanted to stress the importance of creating a relationship like you mentioned because that’s what will keep people coming back to your site.

  2. Great post! Twitter and Facebook are great tools that business need to utalize. One point I wanted to add was while you mentioned it’s important to link to your site it’s also very important that you provide other links to related website becauase then you’re helping provide them with information. This way people want to come back to your site because they relaize you’re a good source of information and not just about selling yourself.

Thank you for your feedback! Yes, creating that relationship is SO important! By the way I checked out your website, very interesting!

  4. Cheri Amour says:

Yes, you’re so right about linking back to your own website as well as related sites. Thank you for that comment, it’s very useful!

  5. As a heavy Twitter users among the photog community, I can say that auto-DMs \"thanking\" people for following are incredible turn offs. It\’s common to hear Twitter folk complaining about auto-DMs since they do not portray any sense of sincerity. If you\’re planning on responding to someone and thank them for following, then make it personal and send a regular @reply.

    Other than that, good info!

Hey Ariston, I know what you’re saying about auto DM’s. I just want to make sure I at least say hi to new people from the start, and the link I’ve sent with it is good info, wouldn’t sent it just to send it, ya know?:)

I do plan on connecting with people on a personal level though, not just auto responses. That would suck!! Lol! Thnx for leaving a comment though! I checked out your blog. Your work is beautiful and there was a particular image that captivated me. SO PRETTY!
